Legal DVD copying is a highly controversial subject and is often the topic of heated debates, especially since nobody can agree on what the laws actually mean. Is it illegal to copy dvd’s? Even as backup copies for personal use? If a consumer goes to the store and buys a DVD the legal way, brings it home only to find out that it skips in some places, is it still illegal for the consumer to burn a working copy of it for personal use?

The answer, in short, is both "yes" and "no".

For the most part, there isn’t such thing as LEGAL DVD copying. However, some aspects of the law aren’t specifically clear, and are open for interpretation. When it comes down to it, copying a DVD is illegal whenever the CSS (content scrambling system), which is an encryption code used to protect DVD’s from being copied, is unscrambled.

The CSS encryption code, unfortunately for Hollywood, is incompetent. The code has been cracked, and there are now countless DVD copy programs that will burn exact copies anyway, despite the entertainment industry’s best efforts. Although technically, legal DVD copying is nonexistent, according to Hollywood, anyway, their security measures failed and many people are copying DVD’s anyway.

When it comes down to it, there *IS* such thing as legal DVD copying. What is ILLEGAL, however, is unscrambling the CSS encryption code. So unless one has access to old copies of DVD’s, DVD burning software, and an old DVD burning drive, it’s hard to copy a DVD in a legal manner. This doesn’t stop the fact that there are countless software programs out there being made and upgraded every single day in order to burn successful copies, even it means to unscramble the scrambled code.

Some of these software programs are for advanced users. Technological savvy individuals can manually go straight through the encrypted protection themselves. Illegal or legal DVD copying—none of it matters to some people, just as long as they can make nice, quality copies successfully. Even those who don’t have a lot of knowledge about how DVD copying software works can find the automatic process easy. None of it’s really hard to catch on to.

What about making backup copies of software and/or games rather than movies? There are a lot of legal DVD copying purposes out there. After all, if copying EVERYTHING is 100% illegal, then why are DVD and CD burners even made in the first place? Why are DVD-R’s sold on the market? Obviously, there are a lot of legal uses. Many people do backup important software and files on DVD’s.

In order to find out more about legal DVD copying, it’s best to read reviews on all the different software programs out there to find out how they all work. For some, none of it’s a big deal and they could care less whether or not it is illegal or legal. For others, though, all of it *IS* a big deal, and they don’t want to take any risks. Here are the few steps that you will have to take to replicate your CD/ DVD.

1. Ask for a quote
Try and contact a few replicators to ask for a quote. The faster they get back to you with a quote, the more you can trust them in terms of speed and efficiency. Remember that lower price does not always guarantee speed in delivery and trustworthiness in service. You might want to consider taking an offer with higher and competitve price in return for the two benefits above. Large quantity orders (10,000+ pieces) will also be cheaper than small orders.

2. Resolve copyright issues

What is a Master disc?

A Master disc is a disc that is supplied to a duplication or replication house for the information to be copied on to blank discs as many times as required. Whether it is audio, software, a presentation or videos. This disc is used as the "master" copy. It is loaded onto the CD/DVD duplication towers, which burns whatever is on the disc its hard drive. It then uses that data on the hard drive and duplicates onto blank media (discs).

A glass master, which is also known as a "stamper" is utilized to stamp all of the data pits into a CD or DVD – this process is called replication. It’s called a "glass master" because a circular block of glass is used, in which no data is pressed onto a special chemical coating. This glass block is actually bigger than normal size CD – 240mm in diameter and 6mm thick. The reason for this is because the discs need to be handled in a way so that the sensitive data area is not scathed or damaged. Even minuscule scratches or scathes can affect the quality of the discs to prevent this the glass master is polished until it’s perfectly smooth.

The milieu in which the glass mastering process is performed in has to be of the highest and cleanest quality. The room itself is a "Class 100" clean room (this is up to 12 times cleaner than an operating theatre). This room is designed not to allow more than 100 particles per cubic foot of air. Your typical working surrounding or office building consists from 500,000 to 1,000,000 per cubic foot of air – very interesting I hear you say! The main particles that can affect the quality of the glass master are dust, pollen and smoke particles.

The replication process takes a lot longer to complete than the duplication process. It is a cheaper but re-assuring method of copying discs. The duplication, although quicker, is dearer and not as quality assured as the replication process.

Some people like to email or upload data to duplication or replication houses for it then to be created as a master. I would strongly recommend against this as there is potential for the data to be corrupted during transfer. This may not be picked up until it gets to the end user. The duplication/replication house will then be held responsible for faulty data.

When dealing with audio masters you will find that production/record companies prefer to finance the creation of masters. This then becomes the property of the record companies. They tend to have an interest in building their catalogue of albums. They even go as far as not taking on independent artists if they have financed the creation of their master themselves. CD stands for compact disk which is a plastic disk which was originally developed to store music and voice in a digital format. The pluses or minuses in the name are largely historical and indicate that a particular type of technology was used to allow for the writing or multiple rewriting capability. This used to matter in that some equipment supported one technology and other equipment supported another. The minus was for a type of disk that only Pioneer, Toshiba, Hitachi, Matsushita Electric (Panasonic) equipment would support and Philips, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Ricoh, Yamaha supported only the plus type of drive. Most current DVD drives can read and write to the disk regardless of the method by which the data is actually stored on the disk so that plus or minus don’t matter.

CDs can hold 74 to 80 minutes of audio or 700 megabytes of data. DVDs can hold from 4.7 gigabytes of data up to 17 gigabytes depending on the number of sides and the number of layers per side used for storage. Blue Ray disks can hold up to 50 gigabytes, but the drives needed to use them are much more expensive than standard DVD drives. Standard DVD drives will run around $50 while Blue Ray will cost around $600.

CD and DVD Speed

When CD and DVD disk speeds are discussed they are referring to the speed at which information can be stored on the disk. The speed at which the information can be read depends on the particular DVD drive that you are using. Most of the time you will not notice a difference.

However, it should be noted that DVD disk speeds are slower than hard disk access.

Since DVD disks are estimated to have a life span of 25 years and are very portable, they are effective media for storing backups of your data.
