CD and DVD Replicators

Information | Comments (1) admin @ 7:09 pm

How To Work with CD and DVD Replicators

So, you have decided to order CD or DVD replication to help triple your sales as I have shown how to do in my previous article.

If you have not read the article, "How To Triple Your Sales With CD DVD Replication", you can do so by going to the website in the resource box below.

Here are the few steps that you will have to take to replicate your CD/ DVD.

1. Ask for a quote
Try and contact a few replicators to ask for a quote. The faster they get back to you with a quote, the more you can trust them in terms of speed and efficiency. Remember that lower price does not always guarantee speed in delivery and trustworthiness in service. You might want to consider taking an offer with higher and competitve price in return for the two benefits above. Large quantity orders (10,000+ pieces) will also be cheaper than small orders.

2. Resolve copyright issues
A legitimate CD DVD replicator/ manufacturer would be very careful in accepting materials for replication. They have to make sure that the customers ordering the replication are the owners of the copyrighted material or at least are licensed to replicate it. A reputable company will ask you to prepare some documents and fill in some forms to make sure the orders are authorized and comply with the CDSA (Content Delivery and Storage Association) Anti Piracy requirements.

3. Choosing your CD or DVD replicator
It is important to determine whether the replicator that you are going to place an order with guarantees the security of your copyrighted material. Do a background check of the company and search for news or other info on them. One reliable source to consult is the Content Delivery and Storage Association, an online directory of anti piracy certified replicators in the world. Many replication jobs are done in Asia due to cheaper, more reliable and more efficient replication methods.

4. Preparing for CD or DVD replication
Before you place an order, there are two things that you need to prepare: the master disc and the artwork. Some good replicators have an in-house premastering studio where they give you limited encoding services. The replicator will send you a JPG or PDF form of your artwork proof for you to approve. With additional cost, they can even provide you with physical proof of the artwork. The second you approve the artwork, the replication process will start.

Audio CD Replication

Audio CD Mastering

Audio CD Mastering involves three steps. Audio mastering is a mysterious technique that is known only by some musical people.

Audio CD Mastering is the process of editing and enhancing audio on high-end equipment so that the sound and loudness of the CD can be improved. This makes a difference between the album sounding like a demo CD and a Pro-Sounding CD. When the CD is mastered, it has better punch, more clarity, better level and superb loudness.

CD Mastering is known to be an occult art that is known only to the musically talented individuals. The correct mastering can make a proper recording sound and convert a great one to a legendary one. Several discs can be made competitive for in-store play and radio. A dominant performance and excellent recording technique sets the basic tone for this voice. Mastering can deeply produce an effect on its impact and resonance. The depth, sense of air, punch and detail can be increased. Vintage tube processors can also work. Experience and a sensation for the music enables to find the best path. In live concerts or recording studios, tapes are made that store the individual performances and these are converted to the final master tape. These are then sent to the replication plant wherein various copies are made. The creation of the final master is called mastering.

Steps of Audio CD Mastering
There are three stages in this process.

cd replication services, music cd duplicationAssembly editing
The tapes from the mixdown sessions or location recording are transferred to a digital editor. The tunes are arranged in a specified order and proper spacing is placed between the cuts. The start and end of cuts are faded to silence or the natural background noise of the performing space. Alternatively, the cuts are crossfaded as desired. Pops, clicks and strange noises, depending on the source and severity are fixed at the mastering stage.

Sweetening
Initially, engineers started cutting master discs to create vinyl records and devised signal processors like compressors, limiters and equalizers to avoid overloading the cutter head. Modifying the settings could produce useful effects on the music, particularly in Pop styles. Equipment and techniques were used to sweeten the sound. Smoothness, clarity, impact and punch are increased depending on the requirement of the music. The aim is to enhance the emotional intensity. In case the performance, recording quality and arrangement are beneficial to start with, the final master sounds are better with the mix tapes. Casual listeners can also notice the difference. The albums require big, radio-ready sound and a competitive edge in pop markets.

Output
The finished music tracks are converted to the media required for mass production, generally Recordable CD. The master disc can be heard on any CD player. Further, the client can audition it and provide the final approval. At times, cassette replicators opt for 4mm DAT tapes.

For CD replicators, mastering involves creation of the glass master disc that can be used to make stampers. Each CD plant opts to prepare the own glass masters for quality control reasons. The glass master has to be a proper mirror image of the CDR master disc created by the music mastering facility.

Audio mastering is a much needed art to create the tracks to be heard well on CD, vinyl or MP3. Mixing means balancing the levels between instruments and effecting the individual instruments to sound good. Mastering means the final step where it is desired to polish the overall sound and maximise volume. Due to compression and clever limiting techniques, the commercial CDs sound much louder than your own mixes.

Audio CD mastering enhances audio mixes so that they can compete with nowaday’s commercial releases. This is the final step prior to sending the CD to a CD manufacturing plant. Mastering the CD uplifts the quality of the songs to the professional standards. The demo or album sounds like all the songs collected together.

CD Replication and Packaging

What is a Master disc?

A Master disc is a disc that is supplied to a duplication or replication house for the information to be copied on to blank discs as many times as required. Whether it is audio, software, a presentation or videos. This disc is used as the "master" copy. It is loaded onto the CD/DVD duplication towers, which burns whatever is on the disc its hard drive. It then uses that data on the hard drive and duplicates onto blank media (discs).

It then uses that data on the hard drive and duplicates onto blank media (discs).cd replication software, cd replication manufacturing

A glass master, which is also known as a "stamper" is utilized to stamp all of the data pits into a CD or DVD – this process is called replication. It’s called a "glass master" because a circular block of glass is used, in which no data is pressed onto a special chemical coating. This glass block is actually bigger than normal size CD – 240mm in diameter and 6mm thick. The reason for this is because the discs need to be handled in a way so that the sensitive data area is not scathed or damaged. Even minuscule scratches or scathes can affect the quality of the discs to prevent this the glass master is polished until it’s perfectly smooth.

The milieu in which the glass mastering process is performed in has to be of the highest and cleanest quality. The room itself is a "Class 100" clean room (this is up to 12 times cleaner than an operating theatre). This room is designed not to allow more than 100 particles per cubic foot of air. Your typical working surrounding or office building consists from 500,000 to 1,000,000 per cubic foot of air – very interesting I hear you say! The main particles that can affect the quality of the glass master are dust, pollen and smoke particles.

The replication process takes a lot longer to complete than the duplication process. It is a cheaper but re-assuring method of copying discs. The duplication, although quicker, is dearer and not as quality assured as the replication process.

Some people like to email or upload data to duplication or replication houses for it then to be created as a master. I would strongly recommend against this as there is potential for the data to be corrupted during transfer. This may not be picked up until it gets to the end user. The duplication/replication house will then be held responsible for faulty data.

When dealing with audio masters you will find that production/record companies prefer to finance the creation of masters. This then becomes the property of the record companies. They tend to have an interest in building their catalogue of albums. They even go as far as not taking on independent artists if they have financed the creation of their master themselves. This deal between the artist and the Production Company is called a "spec" deal.duplication

Deciphering DVD and CD

Information | Comments (0) admin @ 7:09 pm

Deciphering DVD and CD

This article takes the mystery out of DVD and CD information. It makes sense of the + and – R and RW e.g. DVD+R, CD-R etc. It also covers read and write speed, DVD and CD uses, software and burners.

Did you ever wonder what RW, +R, -R or DVD+RW mean? What is the difference between a DVD and CD? This article explains it all in clear and simple terms.

CD stands for compact disk which is a plastic disk which was originally developed to store music and voice in a digital format. DVD stands for Digital Video Disk which generally looks the same as the CD but can contain much more data and deliver it much faster. The disks use optical disk technology and data is written to the disk and read from it by laser light.

The majority of the suffixes such as R and RW, whether preceded by a plus or a minus, indicate whether the disk is read only, write once and then read only, or rewrite able so that data can be modified or added at will. The pluses or minuses in the name are largely historical and indicate that a particular type of technology was used to allow for the writing or multiple rewriting capability. This used to matter in that some equipment supported one technology and other equipment supported another. The minus was for a type of disk that only Pioneer, Toshiba, Hitachi, Matsushita Electric (Panasonic) equipment would support and Philips, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Ricoh, Yamaha supported only the plus type of drive. Most current DVD drives can read and write to the disk regardless of the method by which the data is actually stored on the disk so that plus or minus don’t matter.

The following section summarizes the meaning of the suffixes;

ROM

Meaning

Read only

Notes

Created by some external agency for use on your computer

R

Meaning

Write once and read many (WORM).

Notes

Data that is written to this disk is permanent and the space used for it can’t be overwritten or reused. The primary intended use is to write whatever is desired in one session. After this session it can be read but not written to.

The user can write to this disk until it is finalized. It may be readable by some drives before it is finalized but is not readable by all drives until complete. The DVD can be finalized so that it can be read by any drive even after only a very small amount of data has been written to it.

RW

Meaning

Rewrite able

Notes

The user can rewrite to this disk many times. Data written to it can also be deleted.

RAM

Meaning

Rewrite able

Notes

Sometimes this type disk needs a caddy, which is a special type of tray that holds the disk that is inserted into the drive, to hold the disk

DL

Meaning

Dual layer

Notes

A double layer of storage material is used on each side of the disk, providing more storage capacity.

Audio

Meaning

Data is stored in a special format (which is not a standard PC file format) which was developed to deliver audio

Notes

CD or DVD players can play these disks as well as your computer, but they hold much less data than file formats such as MP3 and WMA.

Video

Meaning

Data is stored in a special format which was developed to deliver video

Notes

This format is intended for feature-length motion pictures that can be played by a DVD player.

BD or HD

Meaning

Blue Ray disk or high definition DVD

Notes

This is the next level of optical disk storage which will provide huge capacities.

Storage Capacity

CDs can hold 74 to 80 minutes of audio or 700 megabytes of data. DVDs can hold from 4.7 gigabytes of data up to 17 gigabytes depending on the number of sides and the number of layers per side used for storage. Blue Ray disks can hold up to 50 gigabytes, but the drives needed to use them are much more expensive than standard DVD drives. Standard DVD drives will run around $50 while Blue Ray will cost around $600.

CD and DVD Speed

When CD and DVD disk speeds are discussed they are referring to the speed at which information can be stored on the disk. The speed at which the information can be read depends on the particular DVD drive that you are using. Most of the time you will not notice a difference.

However, it should be noted that DVD disk speeds are slower than hard disk access.

Detailed information about DVD and CD speed can be found here

DVD Speed

Uses

CDs and DVDs have long been known as the medium used to deliver commercial software.

DVDs are used for playing music and movies. DVDs have much more bandwidth than VHS tape and can provide a much more robust video and audio experience than these tapes.

They are also used for transfer of data from one computer to another.

Backing up your data is an important step in safeguarding your data. If the data can be taken offsite it provides an extra level of security.

Since DVD disks are estimated to have a life span of 25 years and are very portable, they are effective media for storing backups of your data.

DVD and CD Burners

In order to gain the maximum advantage from this technology, one should purchase a drive that supports reading and writing of all formats.

These drives are quite cheap and are generally supported by inexpensive or free software such as Nero Express.

Sometimes to save a small amount of money, drives that write and read CDs but only read from DVDs are offered. The saving is so minimal that these drives should be avoided.

If you have an older drive check the formats that it supports before purchasing CD and DVD media.

LightScribe is an innovative technology that uses a special disc drive, special media, and label-making software to burn labels directly onto CDs and DVDs. This is a lot more readable and prettier than magic marker scribblings on the CD.

See also this Lightscribe Site

With LightScribe enabled DVD drives using LightScribe ready CDs or DVDs (these are standard CDs except that the non recording side of the cd is treated to allow computer generated text and images) the user can make professional looking labels for the disks they create.

DVD Software

There are programs available that allow you to play audio and video content such as Cyberlink PowerDVD. However, Windows Media Player which is supplied with Windows XP can also do this.

DVD and CD burning software such as Nero Express and Roxio Easy DVD Creator provide the tools to record information. They allow you to copy data to the disk and even create a bootable CD or DVD. You can also create audio and video disks that are playable by auto or home players from MP3 or other audio or video file input. DVD and CD copying are also supported unless the source disks are copy protected by content protection schemes. Commercial software, music and video are generally copy protected.

These software tools generally also provide the software necessary to create the LightScribe labels.

How To Triple Your Sales With CD/DVD Replication

Not many businesses realize that using a CD can boost up their sales if used properly, just as it boost up sales for IT how-to publishing.

Many technical how-to books attach optical disk(s) as a bonus for their readers. The CD/DVD usually contains additional information or freeware programs to support the content of the book it is attached to. Not many businesses realize that using a CD can boost up their sales if used properly, just as it can boost up sales for IT businesses.

home cd manufacturing equipmentAny free gifts given away with a certain product, or a quantity of a product, will attract customers. The classic "buy 1 get 2" offer has always worked for the masses. Depending on the value of the information recorded on the CD/DVD, you may see your sales double and even triple by using this technique, while your cost of replicating CD/DVD would be minimal as compared with your usual advertising budget.

Before you try and use this technique, make sure that you do your homework first:

1. Know your Product
Any product can use CD/DVD to boost up sales. Ask yourself this question: what valuable information, connected to your product, could be given away for free to your potential buyers? If you are selling herbal supplement to prevent stroke, for example, a video recorded on DVD detailing how to alter your life-style to prevent stroke would be a value added benefit to your buyers.

2. Identify your Market
If you have a product to sell you will have already identified your market. Knowing your market will help you determine what content to deliver in the free CD/DVD give-away. If you are selling fuel treatment for cars, your market might be interested in a CD/DVD that advises them how to improve fuel efficiency just by changing driving-habits. But if you are selling the same product for motorcycles, the same content of CD/DVD may not be valuable to your customers. In many cases, children are the best buyers. While the parents are usually the main decision makers in shopping, a free CD/DVD of their children’s favorite animation would turn their children into a decisive shopper of a certain milk brand.

3. Track your Content Owner
Make sure that you do not violate any copyright; make sure that the content you are using is yours to legally replicate. If not, track down the owner of the content to pay royalty fees and obtain their right or license to reproduce the content. Go to the distributor of the content and ask to find the owner. They would be happy to help you out. Another option would be to go to an anti-piracy CD/DVD replication plant to see if they provide a service to track down the content owner for you before starting the replication process.

4. Find a Trustworthy CD/DVD Replication Plant
Your worst nightmare with this replication business would be when you can not entrust your copyright protected content to the replicator. One source that can recommend you to a trustworthy CD/DVD replicator is Content Delivery and Storage Association (CDSA). CDSA is a global trade association advocating the innovative and responsible delivery and storage of entertainment, software and information content. Members of this association include replicators with the CDSA anti-piracy certification. These replication plants are guaranteed to protect your content from piracy.

DVD Copy Protection

Information | Comments (2) admin @ 11:09 pm

DVD Copy Protection You Can Rely On!

Recently DVD disc copy protection technologies have fallen by the wayside with developments in DVD ‘ripping’ software and the continual cat and mouse game of hackers and developer. At best, current copy protection offers feeble protection against existing DVD ripping tools on longer-run replicated DVD discs.

24-7dvd.com started new process with unique approach, offering content owners and creators a two-pronged defence against illegal disc copying through:

1. Studio approved digital watermarking
2. 24-7DVD’s copy protection process

The hidden watermark is highly resistant to compression, de-compression, re-compression and format conversion.

In essence, the 24-7 process works by taking client content and encoding and watermarking the video which is then traceable if content is found to be used by an unauthorised source.
short run cd duplication cheap

This type of duplication protection uses an adjustable patent pending algorithm to modify the DVDs data structure so that copy attacks are denied, but the play back process stays completely unharmed.

The process has been externally tested at Intellikey Labs, USA and PMTC Belgium, confirming that the technology provides reliable levels of protection with full playability on DVD player and computers.

24-7s new service is aimed at the low-run duplication market and is ideal for ‘content ahead of release’ schedules, check-discs, sensitive financial information etc.

>>I’m delighted in announcing this first for 24-7DVD<< says Symon Roue, Managing Director of 24-7DVD. It is the first DVD duplication protection software since break of CSS (1999), that provides a decent level of protection against mass market ripping programs. Studios, broadcasters and corporate communication clients are becoming increasingly concerned about the security of their content ending up on video file sharing websites, this new technology secures both the digital ripping process from a DVD and provides analogue protection should the video be dubbed without permission.

We are sure that in future there will be need of copy protection technologies for other types of discs, for example blue ray protection.

DVD Duplicators

DVD Duplicators

Describes how production grade DVD duplicators are used in business.

Many different types of industries use industrial DVD duplication systems on a daily basis. Whether it’s for producing duplicated discs for a client, or creating your own marketing disc, desktop production duplication is becoming increasingly popular among established businesses as well as start ups.

Production grade DVD Duplicators are either an automated duplicator which will pick up and place the blank discs from a spindle or a manual duplicator which requires the operator to manually input and remove discs from the duplication system.

Automated duplicators will do all the work of loading and unloading discs with the use of a robotic arm. As trays are done burning a disc, the arm will remove the burned disc and then drop a new blank disc into the burner. Quality automated systems will even remove bad discs and place them on a reject spindle.

A manual system requires you to babysit the duplicator and add and remove discs as needed. While the manual system is good for short runs of a few discs, if you have several thousand discs to duplicate, it will take a full time person operating it to get the task done.

Media technician has been in the duplication industry since 1988 and manufactures quality automated and manual duplication systems. They have systems in use by many top fortune 500 companies. With many years of duplication industry experience under their belt, they are able to produce a quality system that is affordable for small or large businesses looking to mass produce duplicated media.
